A Singular Record of International Distinction

Dr. de Souza's list of firsts is, by any measure, extraordinary. In 1994 he became the only Indian ever to receive the Orbit International Silver Medal from the Netherlands, awarded for sustained, high-quality original research into orbital, paranasal, and nasal disorders — only the second person in the world to be so honoured. That same year, his research on tetanus and the ear earned him the Hamilton Bailey Award for original work published in the Journal of Laryngology and Otology.

In the years since, he has become the only Indian to hold honorary fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Ireland, and Edinburgh — a distinction earned in 2018, 2022, and 2025 respectively, and unmatched by any other Indian physician. In 2024, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) named him its first-ever recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Literature in the university's twenty-five-year history, and in 2025 he was appointed the university's first ENT PhD guide, a role he holds to this day. For thirty years he has also served as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery at the State University of New York Upstate (Brooklyn) and the Louisiana Health Science Centre in Shreveport.

Setting the International Standard for ENT Education

Few surgeons anywhere have shaped the textbooks their field learns from as directly as Dr. de Souza has. In 2012, he became the only Indian to author a six-volume postgraduate international ENT textbook, published by Thieme International in Stuttgart and now in its second edition. He has gone on to author or edit 65 postgraduate international textbooks, and is the only Indian to have published seven of these in the United States under his own name — all of them approved by the American Medical Association. Springer Nature USA regards him as a genuine asset to its publishing programme; two of his textbooks alone, the Textbook of Otitis Media: Basics and Beyond and the Textbook of Rhinology, have together been downloaded well over 100,000 times, a scale of readership rarely seen for postgraduate surgical texts.

He is also the first person, and the only Indian, to build a sustained publishing partnership with Japanese medical societies, collaborating with the Japan Otological Society on three international textbooks — covering cholesteatoma, temporal bone anatomy, and surgical management of pharyngeal dysphagia — the last produced jointly with Kurume University. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Head and Neck Surgery, and has authored 40 research papers, including five landmark studies on otogenic and cephalic tetanus, congenital cholesteatomas of the cerebellopontine angle, and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy techniques. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he authored three influential textbooks on the crisis — published by PMPH USA, Thieme International, and Jaypee Brothers — with forewords contributed by figures including a US Senator, a US Health Secretary, and a leading Indian physician, works that went on to inform medical protocols internationally. He also serves as a medicolegal expert witness in both the United States and India.

Original Scientific Breakthroughs

Dr. de Souza's research has produced discoveries with direct, life-saving clinical impact. He was the first person in the world to demonstrate spasm of the stapedius muscle as a predictive sign in cephalic tetanus, a finding published in the Journal of Laryngology and Otology (1994) that allowed clinicians, for the first time, to anticipate the onset of generalised spasms and intervene before they occurred. Hailed as a landmark study at the time, the finding is still used today in the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders.

More recently, he has partnered with Professor Tetsuya Ogawa of Nippon Medical School, Japan, to bring the monoclonal antibody Pembrolizumab to India at a more accessible cost — work that is currently awaiting Japanese government approval to proceed to trial.

A Surgeon Who Has Never Left the Community He Serves

Alongside his academic and scientific achievements, Dr. de Souza has built an enduring record of public service. Early in his career, he spent two years providing pro bono care to leprosy patients at the Vimla Dermatological Centre in Versova, developing a protocol to prevent blindness in Hansen's disease that he later presented to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

He has since developed an ongoing hearing restoration programme that has given surgery and audio- verbal therapy to more than 500 marginalised deaf children from underprivileged families, helping them enrol in mainstream schools and pursue further education. In 2023, he created and inaugurated India's first hearing restoration programme dedicated to marginalised deaf women and girls, inaugurated by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living. Many of the children he implanted two decades ago have since built independent lives — finding employment at organisations such as TCS and the State Bank of India, and, in some cases, marrying spouses with normal hearing. He has also established newborn hearing screening programmes across four hospitals, enabling early detection in line with rigorous international protocols.

For 27 years, Dr. de Souza served as ENT and Skull Base Surgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital, where he performed the institution's first temporal bone resection for ear cancer.

Recognition

In 2026 alone, Dr. de Souza was named a “Leading ENT Surgeon to Follow” by InsightsCare: Health Care Solutions Hub, and recognised by Health Care magazine as “India's Leading Pioneer in Hearing Restoration and ENT Surgery.”

Taken together, Dr. Christopher de Souza's career tells a consistent story: a surgeon-scientist who has repeatedly been first — first to publish, first to discover, first to partner across borders — while never losing sight of the patients, particularly children, whose lives his work is ultimately meant to change.
